But it’s time to acknowledge that prep culture has evolved and broken out of the country club. Sperry shoes are now just as comfortable on Pharrell and Eminem as they are on the president of Beta Theta Pi. What once seemed to belong to the few, now belongs to the many. And while some of the old rules might still apply, they’ve been radically redefined.

The “Official Preppy Handbook” came out in 1980 and as you can see, Sperry plays a prominent role in how a true WASP should dress. While it’s meant to take the piss out of the whole preppy scene, it does help to reinforce just how fully entrenched that scene was when it comes to how one should dress and act. Nowadays, the rules may be sacred, but they’ve definitely evolved and the doors have been blown wide open.
